A Capitalist In North Korea

It’s refreshing to find a book about North Korea that isn’t full of demonizing hyperbole. A true insight into a country that is largely misunderstood and misreported in the West. Mr Abt’s very personal experiences lend authenticity to a well-balanced account of both the bigger political and business picture in the republic, and day to day life for ‘regular’ people.

How to Develop the Plot of a Thriller Novel?

By James Marinero
When writing a thriller novel, how does the author set up and develop the plot and build more detail?
The theme can start out with one central idea. Then, it can develop from that idea, as the writing progresses.
Others will start with the idea and map out the plot in detail, before writing. That can be seen as formulaic. Once the plot is laid out in a plan, then some would say that it becomes writing by numbers. Keen readers will see these patterns in many thriller novels.
My preferred approach is to start out with a central idea, and let the story flow. With 'Gate of Tears' it was the extraction of gold from seawater.
Of course, that way, you don't know how the story will go. With thrillers most authors will know that the main character will live for another day. Why let him or her live? Well, it enables them to use the character in a sequel. Obvious.
'Gate of Tears' is set mainly in the Middle East, where the Strait known as the 'Bab el Mandeb' - 'Gate of Tears' - guards the southern entrance to the Red Sea. There are other storylines in Alaska and London besides the Yemen, and the geography helped the plot development. I would find it much more challenging to write a thriller novel that was set in a fairly constrained environment - say a prison.
Then there are other challenges. How can an author deal with a stage in the action where a character has been put in an apparently dead-end situation? Well, firstly, the author backtracks. 'Unwriting' is, for me, a copout and also loses an opportunity for further plot intrigue. So, I wait and think, and sometimes it takes a few weeks to work out an answer (I might need to develop another thread to help resolve the situation). I'll take a notebook and go for a walk. And another walk.
Another issue is 'what happens next'?
An author could do as the main character does in 'The Diceman' - identify some options and let the dice decide. That's an interesting way of moving the plot forward. That's the creative bit.
A newish approach is to let the readers decide, issuing one or more chapters at a time and inviting reader input. I don't favour that.
Technology Input
With techno thrillers the technology itself can tell a story. And, then, if the author has some nous, the writer can extrapolate existing technology. I have a defence equipment blog feed which I follow, and that pours out new technology for me. Then, recently on the television I saw the new Honda robot which can hop on one leg and pour a drink. It was scary, and the weapons possibilities are disturbing (or not - maybe they'd save lives). It's not sci-fi anymore - it's here.
The approaches I describe here all help the plot evolve, whilst allowing room for the mystical creative aspect. My favourite though, is when I tell the main character 'Now, get out of that"!
James Marinero is the author of 'Gate of Tears' - a topical techno thriller set in the Middle East. High level betrayal, aerial action, gold market manipulation - the action is gritty and relentless. Discover more at Find out more about his writing at his blog

Can You Be Charmed By a Werewolf and a Curse?

Charmed by the Werewolf is captivating from the first few lines.  The words and pages are filled with magic.  This story is more than just magical creatures and the paranormal.  A surreal energy seems to seep into your soul simply by reading it.  Author Sandra Sookoo has crafted a charming, supernatural tale.  Xavier Leighton, a werewolf, has learned that Gatekeeper Sophia Raines is his life mate, but she doesn’t know that.  He needs her help to break his curse.  He does not want to live out the rest of his life as a werewolf.  However, Sophia is determined not to succumb to his charms whether it is to help him or to become his lover and mate.  Will Xavier be able to convince her?  The sparks fly between them, but will that be enough to sway Sophia into working towards building a sustainable relationship?

Sookoo’s Charmed by the Werewolf goes way beyond a spicy romance.  I was nearly unable to put the book down.  I found it to be a fabulous page-turner.  With every chapter more and more fascinating layers of the plot were peeled back.  I could feel the raw power emanating from the werewolf energy within Xavier especially when his anger was set alight.  It was as though I could almost feel the irresistible draw to him that Sophia felt.  On top of that, the continual twists and turns drew me to read on and on until the fate of these two paranormal creatures was revealed by Sandra Sookoo.

Right - Hearted Finding What's Right With A Wrong-Sided Heart

Right-Hearted: Finding What's Right With A Wrong Sided Heart, is a short memoir about my life-threatening heart conditions and an unforgettable girl. I was born with a broken heart. Literally. My heart is on the right side instead of the left. I was also born with 6 other random congenital heart defects, which have demanded that I undergo dangerous open-heart surgeries since my birth 16 years ago. After my last operation 3 years ago, at barely 14, I was sent away to live so that I would not kill myself. I spent 2 years learning to accept my heart conditions and learning to appreciate my beating heart. The blurry ambulance rides, countless surgeries, metal machines and two years in a Montana therapy school have all contributed to the unique teenager I am today.

I never knew anybody who completely understood my unique struggles until that night under the full moon.

Standing before the sky I had little idea my next two weeks would be overwhelmed with wild love, lust, confusion, tears and a beautiful girl. She and I would share the stories of our hearts...our right-sided hearts. Right-Hearted: Finding What's Right With A Wrong Sided Heart is the story of two lustful teenagers who together confront their life-threatening conditions and learn to embrace their broken hearts.

Beautiful Romantic Poems for Lovers

Aaron and Serafina is a wonderful collection of poems written by Nina Kedar.  In this collection, the poems are written from the perspective of each of the two lovers.  Some poems come from the viewpoint of Serafina while others come from Aaron’s perspective.  This unique concept displays lessons in how to love, how to accept love and how to let be.  The poetry follows a seemingly linear progression.  Yet, the depth of Aaron and Serafina’s poems go far beyond logical understanding.  They are filled to the brim with beautiful and soulful emotion.  Their poems express their passion for one another on a physical level, but they, also, brilliantly convey their passion for one another on a soul deep level.

Nina Kedar does a wonderful job of showing just how love is truly an art.  She made me feel - truly feel - how much further it goes than just an emotion or something we say to one another.  Her poetry is so artistic and she drew such beautiful imagery in my mind as I read Aaron and Serafina that I felt their joy, their fear, their passion and their impending growth.  More than that, I felt love in my own heart and soul for my sweetheart.  These are poems that I can see, I can hear, and I almost feel being read from one lover to another in an effort to be incredibly romantic.  Kedar shares a tender and heartwarming interpretation of love, relationship, partnership and passion.  She clearly displays the spiritual and energetic nature of love.  Well done!

No More Ho-Hum Love Life...Make it Extraordinary

I recently reviewed this book for Readers' Favorite and loved it!
Intimacy and Relationship Specialist Maggie Bain has written a powerful and very helpful book for couples called Love on the Rock: Take Your Love Life from ‘Ho-Hum’ to Extraordinary.  She shares from her personal life in a way that helps keep Love on The Rock down to earth, and makes it evident that she understands on an individual level and on a couple level the various phases of relationship – the good, the amazing, the need for space and the unpleasant.  Bain expresses these various seasons, as she calls them, in ways that are unique and with concepts that are easy to grasp.  Throughout the book, at the end of each chapter, she shares a short checklist of how to love better.  These make for fabulous, quick and easy exercises couples and individuals can do.

Maggie Bain cuts to the chase in Love on the Rock.  In fact, I found that her book is jammed packed full of wisdom and advice.  I really love the fact that she opened up and shared about her own relationship.  She didn’t just toss out general advice that is expected to work for every couple at every point in their relationship.  Instead, she explored possibilities across the expanse of a relationship.  As a fellow relationship expert, I truly appreciated this approach.  Love on The Rock is more than just a self-help book for couples.  It is fun to read from the unique twists that she puts on the word “rock” to her personal love story to the fun activities at the end of each chapter.

Female Kundalini

Female Kundalini is first and foremost the true story of my spiritual journey, my Alpha to Omega. I have striven to make it as authentic and true as possible. It’s entitled Female Kundalini because Shakti is female, and even though Shakti is female, each of us – male or female – share this energy. I am a female and have experienced Kundalini as a woman, so “Female Kundalini” is an appropriate title.

The book describes my experiences, and it is only through experiences that I am able to summon the authority to speak on this topic. I don’t offer techniques or methods to awaken Kundalini because I don’t advocate using techniques or methods beyond attending Kundalini yoga classes. I don’t guarantee that if someone were to do the same things I have done, either intentionally or unintentionally, that he/she would achieve at the same results. What I do know, and would stake my life on, is the universality of the life force energy that lies within.

I didn’t recognize that I was on a spiritual path until Kundalini rose. The book reflects this perspective, me, looking back over the events of my life: where I started and where I am now. Since 1998 when Kundalini rose for the second time, I have been much more aware of this path. Up to that time, studying Buddhism and pondering continuously was more like a hobby than something that I was ever going to experience.

Nevertheless, because a part of me committed unconsciously to this path when I was young, I have always taken jobs that haven’t exhausted my energy. Maintaining my integrity and paying my way in life has always been important, but not at the expense of spiritual pursuits. I recall speaking with a friend who told me how much she wanted to achieve material success. I remember thinking “I want to get off.” It was by detaching myself mentally from the material, while, at the same time, remaining in the material world, that triggered the shift of consciousness in me, which led me to Kundalini.

Female Kundalini offers much to analyze and evaluate: fertile ground for opinion on me, my upbringing, and the events of my life. All of that is valid. However, the actual Kundalini-rising experience, and my awareness during those events, stand on their own. I am forever grateful to have had the Grace of that awareness and am thankful that it has given me the material for Female Kundalini

Experience changes knowledge into wisdom. That said, I hope people will compare my account to other Kundalini accounts in order to become more discerning about the many accounts made on the spiritual path. Because the spiritual supermarket is so lucrative, the need for discernment has never been greater. Before we uphold a work as a paragon of wisdom, we need to test its actuality against other criteria, including our own experience.

Female Kundalini is very much an account of a stage in my spiritual journey. It is by no means the end, but it does serve as a signpost for the early stages of Kundalini, cognizant that, once Kundalini rises, “doing” on the individual’s part is very much done…because that’s when Kundalini takes over and, as my publisher and editor says, “IT does YOU.”

Light in the Night: Spirit Photography

Lois Anne Smith, a medium and healer, compiled a fantastic number of spiritual photographs in Light in the Night: Spirit Photography at The Cottage.  She starts off by explaining what she means by spirit photography.  There are thousands, maybe millions, of people who have claimed to capture pictures of orbs of light in their photos, and Smith writes about her skepticism and needing to see things for herself as well as her fascination with those little “orbs of light and other energies” that sometimes show up in photographs that the human eye were unable to detect.  Light in the Night includes wonderful descriptions of Spiritual Council Members, Joy Guides, Gnomes and more.  Inside you will discover captivating photographs that show far more than just a bunch of orbs picture after picture.  Smith shares some of her favorite photographs, which she personally took near and around the small cottage she built to serve her clients.

Light in the Night is a spiritual delight.  The pictures are intriguing and made me want to turn the page to see what other pictures Smith had chosen to share.  I loved the way she explained a number of different beings.  Some of Smith’s mist photographs were more than just puffy looking clouds though.  She enlightened me as I read her description of those pictures.  Light in the Night displays pictures of a fairy and animal totems as well as tons of orbs.  After reading Smith’s book and looking at her photos, I am looking forward to snapping some more pictures myself as I have captured orbs previously.  Just what else might I see in my own pictures now that I have read Lois Anne Smith’s perspective of the spiritual plane in Light in the Night?
