The Sparrow's Spirit

The Sparrow's Spirit
by Bill Welker

The Sparrow’s Spirit is an inspirational tale of triumph over self-destruction and adversity. Bill Welker vividly describes his lifelong battle to conquer the ultimate opponent – himself.  -Rob Koll, NCAA National Champion, Head Wrestling Coach at Cornell University

Dr. Bill Welker’s road to adulthood was filled with many trial-and-error experiences in which he usually took the wrong path. He grew up under the dominion of a loving mother and an austere father.

As an adolescent, Welker’s life revolved around the sport of wrestling – and nothing else. Studying in high school was an unwanted necessity to stay eligible. But the desire to continue on the mats in college decreased until the fire to compete burned out. Welker began to make very poor choices which resulted in his removal from the wrestling team and almost led to his expulsion from school.

Welker felt totally alone as his life began to collapse around him. There was nowhere to turn; he couldn’t go home a failure. He was absorbed by self-doubt, uselessness, and fell into a deep depression.

Welker had lost all hope until he began to change priorities and found someone who believed in him. Still, the struggle wasn’t over, but the struggle is the glory.

Unbroken

Unbroken:One Woman's Journey to Rebuild a Life Shattered by Violence. A True Story of Survival and Hope

by Madeleine Black

Madeleine Black has experienced more in her life than most ever will, but few have walked away from such carnage with her quiet dignity.

She was gang raped when she was 13 years old and was consequently raped 3 more times before the age of 18. One might wonder how such things could happen but the reader will see how a slippery slope can be created from the horrible actions of just one night.

The events of that first rape were so traumatic; it took Madeleine many years and a lot of hard work to uncover the memories of that attack.  Could she believe such things? Would she make up such things? All the while, she was doing her best to carry out her “Best Revenge” plan: leading a good and happy life. But the road to living such a life was long and painful.

So how does one emerge from such depths? And can others do it as well? Madeleine tells her story in vivid, candid detail. Her words are simple and straight. Her story is accessible and relatable. That’s because her message is about how a person chooses to recover from adversity. It’s not about what knocks a person down; it’s how they get back up.

Forgiveness was the key for Madeleine. True forgiveness takes genuine effort. It takes a real desire to understand those who may have done us harm and caring enough about one’s self to take the necessary steps.  Madeleine shows us that it’s worth the effort. And really, if we’ve already suffered hardship, what do we have to lose?

The Last American Senate

The Last American Senate
by Greg T Meyers

For those paying attention in the year 2040, right on cue, the sun turns her back on the solar system; plunging the world into the deepest solar minimum since 1640 but the ice-age conditions are the least of the catastrophic changes on the planet.

Western Europe is on the brink of war with a united Middle East as the United States grows weary of being the world police. While war is deliberated in the U.S. Senate, an obscure committee discovers they are already involved, but on which side?

The technological and military domination of the West is quickly becoming meaningless due to the devastating global changes brought about by the Minimum and it appears that the next world war will be fought with swords and unimagineable magic.

Too late, the Senate learns who is behind the global unrest and that their enemy has had a ten year head start as they use the solar minimum in every way to their terrible advantage.

The rich and realistic storytelling of Greg T Meyers will leave you cheering and perhaps fearing that the actual solar minimum we are now experiencing just might have dire consequences for us all.

The French Encounter
by Jenna Brandt

While fleeing from danger and searching for her long-lost brother in Paris, Lady Margaret encounters new love. Despite her troubled past, can Lady Margaret discover hope for the future?
This is a memoir of a cycling trip that started at Versailles and continued through Paris and along the Marne valley to the Champagne region in France. The route follows that taken by King Louis XVI of France and Marie-Antoinette in their unsuccessful attempt to escape the wrath of the French Revolution, leading to their capture, return to imprisonment and eventual executions. Their story is interwoven with our journey. There is also reference to some of the significant battles that took place in the Marne Valley during WW1. But hey! It's not all doom and gloom - there's plenty of humour too.  I think it's a good read for history buffs and armchair travellers.

Snowflakes
by  Steve Catto

Growing up in a little settlement with no clear memories of her early childhood would give any girl a particularly interesting perspective on life.  A handsome young man turning up from nowhere one morning would make her world look even better, but running away with him to a house that’s occupied by another girl certainly wouldn’t.  Especially when she’s younger, more attractive, more intelligent... and blonde. That’s just the way the world works.  Unfortunately, having a rant at the world with an axe probably isn’t a good idea. It might decide to answer back.

Steel, Blood & Fire

On the march, around the campfire, and in the taverns, they tell incredible stories about Tarmun Vykers, the Reaper – how he’s never been cut in battle, how he once defeated hundreds of men by himself, how he exterminated an entire people over an insult. These stories make Vykers seem like a god, but he is a man, an arrogant, ruthless and bloodthirsty man. For all that, he may be the only thing standing between the human race and utter annihilation at the hands of the mad wizard who calls himself the End-of-All-Things. Against this backdrop, smaller, lesser folks struggle to fulfill their own destinies, folks like Aoife, burdened with a secret so dark she is driven to do the unimaginable and seek an alliance with fey powers no mortal has ever encountered.

The Other Side of Philip K. Dick

“As a literary figure, Philip K. Dick is popularly perceived as a crazed, drug-addled mystic with a sinister Third Eye. Nothing could be further from the truth - the Phil I knew was a warm, humane, very funny man. Maer Wilson understands these truths far better than I, and The Other Side of Philip K. Dick casts a welcome shaft of daylight upon the real PKD, as opposed to the dark, distorted caricature Dick has become.” Paul M. Sammon, Author of Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner

What is the truth behind the legend of Science Fiction great, Philip K. Dick?

In spring, 1972, Phil Dick moved to Fullerton, CA, where he met Theatre student Mary (Maer) Wilson. Amid marriage proposals, marathon talk-fests and a love for music and films, they forged a strong friendship that would last the rest of his life.

Wilson’s quirky, yet unflinchingly honest, memoir reveals a funny, compassionate and generous man. She captures an inside view of one of our literary greats – a brilliant writer who gave the world some of its most revered Science Fiction.

“I found this book engrossing and authentic – a truthful and serious account of the last part of Phil Dick’s life by someone who was a fundamental part of it and who has the skill to write about it. There is evident love and friendship in this book, but also honesty. This was the Phil Dick I knew.” James P. Blaylock, World Fantasy Award-Winning Author

Ape Mind-Old Mind-New Mind

The Evolution of the Human Spirit (excerpt)

The remarkable aspect of evolution by sexual selection, which Darwin so courageously proposed, is that it is driven merely by the desire for a trait, in this case the desire for justice. I had realized that sexual selection is not only driven by the peahen's desire for the peacock's tail, but also by the peacock's desire to be desired for his tail (i.e., vanity). So what gave sexual selection the creative power to launch and then sustain our hominin tribe was, and still is, the combined effect of both the desire for justice and the desire to be just, both passed down together tightly engaged in pioneering the frontiers of rightness and wrongness.

Indeed, the fact that our minds are comprised of capacities determined by motivations that are both subject and object has much to do with both our expansive consciousness and our linguistic virtuosity. We are at once the seer and the seen, condemner and condemned, lover and loved. However, because human evolution has left us so intricately fraught with these condensed motivations, our minds are also vulnerable to the unraveling of emotion into the spinning feedback scream of mental illness.

I had not initially realized the extent of the role played by natural selection in the conversion from submission and dominance in apes to obedience and authority in humans. Under the protective shield of justice, groups of mated pair-bonds could evolve the productive benefits of coordinating and dividing the labor of child care and food gathering. At the end of the day, those groupings of relationships that "believed" in the rules of this organic social structure would be naturally selected. The procreative benefits to individuals within a given group immersed in this obedience-authority system would exceed any benefits of pursuing their own dominance. The will to dominate in the ape mind transformed into the authority of justice in the early human (old) mind by migrating from individuals to dwelling within the thin ether of relationships between individuals; no one could see it, but all could feel it. This invisible but biologically based will could be said to possesses intentions, i.e.: a spirit . . . the human spirit. Human bonds animated by this still evolving spirit ultimately would become more powerful than those of blood, tribe or country.
